WIM TV trial at Beijing Olympics

1          General description of the DMP WIM TV trial

The DMP WIM TV trial provides a publication and delivery platform for User Generated Content (UGC) produced by Beijing citizens, or residents living in Beijing or students of selected universities. The content is published with a Creative Common (CC) like Licence using the REL Open Access Content (OAC) Profile and uploaded to a Content Provider Device (CPD). The content published on the WIM TV trial platform can be anything for which the Creator holds rights (hence no Olympic Games content, in general). Therefore the recommended type of content can be described as “discover Beijing during the Olympic Games, but outside of the Olympic Games”.

Examples of suitable content, produced using an interim version of the Digital Item Presentation standard, could be:

  1.      The life of a Beijinger during the week end
  2.      A small interesting corner in old Beijing
  3.      A small event that never reaches the media, but is very interesting nonetheless
  4.      Some nice, unknown place in the Beijing countryside worth visiting
  5.      Some not well-known historical place in Beijing
  6.      A commuting experience in Beijing
  7.      Raising a child in Beijing
  8.      The life of a high school student in Beijing
  9.      The animated life of a typical market
  10. A traditional Beijing festival on a square
  11. A ceremony in a temple
  12. The life of a Beijing family on Sunday
  13. The life of a student who came to Beijing from afar
  14. The life of students from different nationalities in Beijing
  15. The life of children whose parents are migrate workers to Beijing
  16. Valentine’s Day in Beijing
  17. Multinational marriages in Beijing

All WIM TV trial content will be uploaded on the CPD located in Beijing and will be accessible by users in ChinIf there will be an interest, mirror CPDs may be set up in other countries (or other locations in China) to serve local users. Different CPDs may have different delivery capabilities.

An application collecting Event Reports generated by EUDs

EUD

A Device capable of receiving, parsing, decoding and presenting a DCI, freely available to all participants in the WIM TV trial

It may be necessary to have the CCD as a signed application so that it is known who is actually uploading content to the Main CPIt is also be necessary (even less critical) to have the EUD as a signed application so that the Event Reports collected are reliable.

2          A walkthrough

2.1        Content Creation

Pota is a participant in the WIM TV trial as a Creator.

  1.      Pota downloads the CCD and installs it on his PC
  2.      CCD authenticates with the DID
  3.      Pota begins the creation of a Content Item
  4.      Pota selects a video taken the day before
  5.      CCD gets an identifier for the video
  6.      Pota creates presentation information using the Laser authoring functionality of the CCD
  7.      CCD gets an identifier for the presentation information
  8.      Pota selects an OAC licence from a menu
  9.      CCD gets an identifier for the licence
  10. Pota describes how the Content Item is broken down for transmission using the Bitstream Binding Language (BBL) – the exact nature of this will depend on the actual DIS creation functionality
  11. 1 CCD gets an identifier for the Content Item
  12. 1 Pota uploads the Content Item (including the resource) to the Main CPD

2.2        Content Provision

M-CPD is the Main CPD in Beijing

  1.      M-CPD receives a request to stream Pota’s Content Item
  2.      M-CPD streams the requested Content Item without further checks unless Zhiming does not accept the CC licence terms

2.3        Content Consumption

Zhiming is a participant in the WIM TV trial as an End User.

  1.      Zhiming downloads the EUD and installs it on his PC
  2.      EUD authenticates with the DID
  3.      Zhiming browses a CPD and finds Pota’s Content Item to be to his liking
  4.      EUD requests Pota’s Content Item via the Access Content as Stream Protocol
  5.      CPD starts streaming Pota’s Content Item
  6.      EUD displays the figure below
  7.      Zhiming accepts the CC licence
  8.      EUD executes as authored by Pota
    1. display resources
    2. present metadata
    3. generate event reports

2.4        Event Collection

ECD will collect all events generated by all EUDs and put them in a data base. What use will be made of such collected events is TBSome query functionality such as “what is the video most watched today?” will be supported, e.g. for the purpose of awarding the most successful creators.

2.5        Content Mirroring

Content uploaded to the Main CPD will be mirrored by all CPDs participating in the WIM TV trial.

4          Further issues to be considered

4.1        Content Creation

Establishment of a Chinese community of WIM TV creators

  1.      UGC creators
    1.       Establish link with Chinese Creative Commons community (Prof. Wang Chunyan of Renmin University) , video clubs etc
    2.      Inform the worldwide Creative Commons community of the WIM TV trial
  2.      Professional creators
    1.       Establish link with companies collecting short clips of professional videos
    2.      Get the involvement of
      1. Beijing Film Academy
      2. Communication University of China
      3. School of Arts, Peking University - confirmed

4.2        Content Provision

Find operators willing to provide servers and network access – Major telco expected to provide access and server (CPD)

Find manufacturers willing to provide streamers – if we can nicely separate metadata streaming from resource streaming, then we can probably get hardware streamers from the major telco company.

It is desirable to have two video resolutions

4.3        Content Consumption

We can have the following types of EUD

  1.      Downloadable EUD for PC
  2.      Set top boxes with Linux, what about Java support?
  3.      Mobile WiFi devices (e.g. Nokia 800, Samsung ???)
  4.      Mobile handset???

4.4        Promotion

  1.      Decide on an attractive message – there is a need to get the involvement of some professionals, e.g. famous profession of communication in a famous university)
  2.      Give a good name to the WIM TV trial
    1.       Discover Beijing
    2.      Real Beijing
    3.       ...
  3.      Spread the message to media (e.g. provide press support for conventional media and a web destination to help them tell their story)
    1.       Press
    2.      Web sites (blogs,…)
    3.       Radio
    4.      TV
  4.      Set up WIM TV trial web site (in Chinese and English) for people to go to in order to learn more, how to participate, sign up for e-mails to learn about updates
  5.      Encourage people to set up blogs (e.g. by those who make content, develop software for the trial et) and viral social media
  6.      Make people in Beijing aware of the existence of the WIM TV trial for the Olympic Games
  7.      Set up attractive WIM TV Awards for best person who
    1.       create best videos
